When exploring the world of Filipino martial arts, you'll quickly notice multiple names—Eskrima, Escrima, Kali, and Arnis—often used interchangeably. Additionally, various styles like Balintawak and Doce Pares highlight the art's diversity. But why are there so many names, and what sets these styles apart?

Eskrima Kali Arnis

Why Different Names?

The terms Eskrima, Escrima, Kali, and Arnis primarily differ due to linguistic and regional variations across the Philippines:

  • Eskrima/Escrima: These spellings derive from the Spanish word "esgrima," meaning fencing or swordsmanship, reflecting Spain's colonial influence on Filipino martial arts. The variations in spelling result from regional dialects and historical usage.

  • Kali: Some practitioners prefer "Kali," suggesting older indigenous roots predating Spanish colonization. While historically debated, Kali emphasizes the pre-colonial heritage and connection to traditional Filipino culture.

  • Arnis: Commonly used, especially in Luzon and Visayan regions, Arnis comes from the Spanish term "arnés," referring to armor or protective gear, once used in training.

All three terms refer to essentially the same core martial art but highlight different historical or cultural aspects.

Popular Styles of Eskrima

Filipino martial arts consist of numerous distinct styles, each with unique techniques and teaching methodologies. Two prominent styles include:

Balintawak

  • Focus: Close-range combat, rapid strikes, effective counterattacks.

  • Characteristics: Known for its speed, precision, and efficient blocking techniques, Balintawak practitioners excel in controlled sparring and realistic scenarios.

Doce Pares

  • Origin: Established in 1932 by twelve masters in Cebu City, notably by Ciriaco and Dionisio Cañete.

  • Focus: Comprehensive approach blending single-stick, double-stick, knife, empty-hand techniques, and forms ("sayaw").

  • Characteristics: Versatile and systematic, Doce Pares integrates various weaponry and emphasizes adaptability in combat.

Other Notable Styles

  • Pekiti Tirsia Kali: Specializes in edged weaponry and tactical self-defense.

  • Modern Arnis: Developed by Remy Presas, promoting practical self-defense and accessibility for beginners.

  • Lightning Scientific Arnis: Recognized for speed and precision in both weapon and empty-hand techniques.

Why Understanding Styles Matters

While core principles of Eskrima remain consistent, each style emphasizes different aspects, techniques, and applications. Understanding these differences allows practitioners to select training that aligns with their personal interests and self-defense objectives.
